As I already mentioned, the term “focus to infinity or infinity focus” is popular and used in landscape photography, astrophotography, sky photography, night photography, etc.
Focus to infinity is an approach in photography where photographers focus on the objects which are far away and difficult to capture using AutoFocus.
In simple words, when we set our camera to take pictures of subjects which are on the distance where the camera does not focus automatically, either our eyes can see it, then we say set the camera to infinity focus, and we change the setting manually.
So we can capture all photos in high quality.
Possible Challenges while “focus to infinity”
The problem that you face with a Nikon 18-55mm camera lens is they have no focus indicators like modern lenses where you can see numbers and infinity signs placed on the lens.

How to “focus to infinity” with a kit 18-55mm without an indicator?
The best and most effective way to focus on an infinity Nikon 18-55mm camera is to point out a relatively far away object or subject such as a tree, lamppost, or anything with the light.
Next, rotate the lens ring until you get a clear and sharp view of the object. It is the best practice that I use and recommends to you as well. Then through the camera, focus another object until you reach the object you want to capture.
If you’re focusing the object using AF, then make sure you lock it using the AutoFocus lock button.
How to “Infinity Focus” with an 18-55mm kit using HyperFocal distance technique?
Hyperfocal distance is one of the best focus techniques available. Sometimes objects do not have any indicator that can be helpful to focus, so in this case, we used the technique hyperfocal.
In this technique, we used formulas and do a calculation to achieve maximum distance in minimum focus distance.
Hyperlocal is itself a bigger topic, and it takes time to explain, or you’re not good with formulas and math, then you can use an app named HyperFocal Pro. All you need to do is to enter dimensions, and you’ll get a focal length.
Let’s see step by step…
In this process, the most important thing that you have to take care of is the HyperFocal distance section, and the process is very simple.
1. First of all, you have to select your Camera model. For example, I want to choose d3400, but I didn’t found, so I select the relatively close model, and here I choose Nikon d3300.
2. Next, choose the Lens option and choose a number. Here you have to enter dimensions of how far you zoomed in your camera. I choose 45.
3. After choosing the lens number next, go to aperture option, and choose the aperture. Here I’m going with a higher number, so I choose f/32.
4. The last option you have to see is the Subject distance. After giving distance, you’ll see below Hyperfocal distance. In my case, it showed 3.41m.
So the base on the lens in the aperture application tells us we need to focus an object at 3.41m distance to get infinity focus.

How do you manually focus to infinity?
The cameras which have distance indicators and infinity signs they’re easy to focus to infinity and using the following method, you can easily set them to infinity focus.
- Set your camera in manual mode
- Next, move the lens ring in front of the infinity sign (∞).
- Slide the ring slightly backward. I recommend that the 16th of an inch is a good setting. If it’s not working for you, then slide it more up or down.
Next, approach the object you want to capture, make small changes, and you’ll get a sweet spot of focus to infinity.
When can I focus to infinity?
The simple and straight answer is we use focus to infinity or infinity focus in situations where our camera does not focus objects using AutoFocus.
